http://www.hillcountrykiwanis.org/articles/2008/02/14/kiwanis-one-day-april-5th en-us40 <P><B>Kiwanis One Day Project</B></p> <P>April 5, 2008</p> <P><B>Goal</B></p> <P>Establish the first Saturday in April as Maggie Johnson Day, an opportunity for Maggie Johnson residents, Kiwanians and local neighbors, churches and businesses to join together to undertake projects that will improve the quality of life for residents at <A HREF="http://www.aaacap.org/maggiejohnson.html">Maggie Johnson Nursing Center</A>. </p> <P><B>Background</B></p> <P>Maggie Johnson, located at 3406 E. 17th Street in Austin, TX provides a home and skilled nursing care for 50 senior and disabled residents. Most residents have very limited assets and income; rely on Medicaid to help pay for their care; and are limited to Medicaid’s $60 per month income allowance to sustain their quality of life. </p> <P><B>Potential Projects/Activities</B></p> <OL> <LI>Craft and Food Sale – Sell crafts created by Maggie Johnson residents and sell food, with proceeds distributed to nursing home residents to enhance their quality of life.</LI> <LI>Trim Shrubs in Front of Building</LI> <LI>Paint Trim in Front of Building</LI> <LI>Paint Back of Building</LI> <LI>Create Trail in Back of Building for Residents to Enjoy</LI> <LI>Repair (Reside), Calk and Paint Two Wood Utility Buildings (10x20)</LI> <LI>Install Light on Covered Patio at Rear of Building</LI> </OL> <p><B>Resources and Skills Needed</B></p> <p>Home Depot located at I-35 and St. Johns has previously undertaken projects to benefit the residents at Maggie Johnson. Home Depot may be a source for Paint, Paint Rollers and Brushes, Calk, Wood Siding, Electrical Conduit, Electrical Cable and/or a Light Fixture.
